Grants Overview

>>About the Foundation

The Foundation's purpose is to promote cooperation and understanding between the people of Taiwan and the U.S. through educational exchange. It has been both a pioneer and a mirror in Taiwan, always being one of the first to identify and respond to the needs of various phases of Taiwan's development. Thus, in the early years it concentrated on exchanges in the areas of engineering, science, and economics. The focus gradually changed to social sciences and humanities As a result, many of the leaders in social movements concerned with women's rights, democracy, copyright law, child abuse, urbanization, etc., are Fulbright alumni. In recent years, the Foundation has been emphasizing culture and the arts.

The Foundation had sent over 1000Taiwan Fulbright grantees to the U.S. and more than 700 American Fulbright grantees have come to Taiwan. In 2005-2006, 15 American lecturers and researchers, and 23 American students, received grants to come to Taiwan under the Fulbright program; 25 Taiwan researchers, 17 Taiwan students, and 3 Taiwan non-academic professionals received Fulbright grants to go to the U.S. Financially, 50-50 parity in contributions from the U.S. and Taiwan was reached in 1992. Taiwan also provides in-kind contributions in the form of free housing for all lecturers, and salaries for some lecturers. The U.S. side provides placement as well as insurance for the grantees.

In 1962, the Foundation opened a student advising office for the many students from Taiwan who needed information about study in the U.S.
