[Announcement] Dr. William Vocke Announces Retirement

2019/1/4

Dear Friends of Fulbright Taiwan:

Recently, Dr. William Vocke, our Executive Director, notified the Board of the Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (FSE) that he intends to retire when his contract ends in mid-2019. I know the decision was a difficult one for him since he believes very deeply in the vision of Fulbright and very much enjoys the work. His reasons revolve primarily around family concerns, particularly the rapid advance of the grandchildren toward college. He and Carol simply desire to spend more quality time with them.

The Board has begun the process of identifying a successor and has engaged a professional executive recruitment expert to assist us with this process. Will has also very generously agreed to stay on for a time and be available to FSE and the new Executive Director for as long as is necessary to ensure a smooth transition and the continued success of our Fulbright Taiwan program.

More details on the transition will be forthcoming but, for the moment, we would ask that you please let interested people know that the FSE/Fulbright Taiwan Executive Director position will be coming open very soon and after January 18, a description can be found at www.fulbright.org.tw/edjob. Inquiries can also be directed to edjob@fse.fulbright.org.tw. We hope you can assist us as we seek to continue the excellence that has marked Fulbright Taiwan’s history.

Finally, on behalf of the Board, I want to thank Will for his 8-plus years of service. During that time the number of grantees has doubled from 111 to an estimated 230 for the 2019-20 year. He has been instrumental in the growth of the FSE budget by 225% with the bulk of new funds coming from Taiwan sources. The outstanding FSE staff has benefitted from his leadership and guidance and taken advantage of opportunities to improve their professionalism and efficiency. Perhaps, most importantly, the tradition of excellence Will inherited has been maintained and enhanced. Due to Will’s leadership and vision, FSE is recognized as a global leader within the global Fulbright community. The vision remains “a world with a little more knowledge and a little less conflict.”

Will and his wife, Carol, intend to retire both in the United States in North Carolina and in Taiwan on their beloved organic tea farm in Taitung. We wish them both a long and joyful retirement.

Sincerely,
Jesse Curtis, Chair of the Board, Fulbright Taiwan
Head of Public Diplomacy, AIT
