Taiwan English Teaching Flagship Awards (ETF)

Description and Purpose

The English Teaching Flagship Awards is given to those who are willing and are qualified to be English teachers in Taiwan. The FSE (The Foundation for Scholarly Exchange) is cooperating with MOE (Ministry of Education) in Taiwan in order to achieve the goal of becoming a
bilingual country by 2030. 

We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic in the field of English Teaching and Education, and have experience in real-life classrooms. We offer a chance to live in Taiwan and experience cultural exchange, bringing your creativity to the students while learning
from Taiwanese educators.

You will be an ETF who works with local teachers, creating an English environment for elementary students and junior high students to learn English and other subjects. By staying in Taiwan and immersing the culture for a full school year, we believe that you will achieve more than expected.

  1. Total Monthly Payment: NT$45,000.
  2. Settling-in & Baggage Allowance (A one-time-only allowance): NT$26,000.
  3. Round-trip air ticket between Taiwan and the U.S.
  4. National Health Insurance.
  5. Monthly compensation of NT$ 5,000 for professional development in learning Mandarin or acquiring a TESOL certificate.

Eligibility Criteria

You must be an U.S. citizen to receive the grant.

Welcome to apply if you are one of the following:

  1. Applicants who have received and completed the Fulbright ETA Awards.
  2. Applicants who are currently teaching English in Taiwan or other countries, with at least one year of full-time English-teaching experience.
  3. Applicants with a master’s degree in TEFL or an English-teaching related degree.

Responsibilities & Expectations:

You must be an U.S. citizen to receive the grant.

ETFs will be placed in elementary schools (G1-G6) or junior high schools (G7-G9).

An ETF may teach independently or co-teach with Taiwanese teachers in the class, teaching 18-20 class hours per week, with support from local coordinators and professional advisors. ETFs are required to stay in school during school days, usually from 8:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday (may differ individually according to individual school schedule.)

The grantees will be invited to submit their preference for the locations they prefer to be placed. Former grantees are also welcome to continue their grant at the same site.

Locations: Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, Kinmen, Penghu.

Events to attend in your grant period:

  • Summer Training: Assisting the training and support for new ETAs and local teachers in August.
  • Workshops: For each 18-week semester, each grantee will participate in at least 3 different weekday afternoon workshops and may be invited to share teaching resources or teaching demonstrations.
  • Remote Service Camps: Join one of the four remote camps,  co-organize and hold English learning activities for young kids for a weekend, and get to know Taiwan in another aspect.
  • Cultural Events: Explore the cultural activities in their communities.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Reports: ETFs will submit three written reports per semester.
  • Teaching observations: Open your classroom for advisors and coordinators to visit and observe your teaching. The observation takes place at least once per year.
  • Teaching related projects: These can be team projects or personal projects related to teaching. The teaching projects may be presented during the English Language Forum.
  • Attend English/Bilingual teaching forum: Attend Bilingual and Education Forums and conferences held by FSE to receive professional training.

Non-Grantee Applicant

If you haven’t received Taiwan ETA or ETF grant, please submit the following required documents by Email no later than before deadline:

  • A statement of purpose in English Teaching Flagship Award
  • English CV (with your cell phone number or easy-to-be contacted number) and email address
  • Two Recommendation letters (English teaching experience related)
  • Academic transcript and degree certification (photocopy is acceptable)
  • Copy of your US passport
